Enjoying Fall and Winter in the City

Many people may argue that fall and winter are best enjoyed out in the wilderness where you can fully appreciate the beauty of fall foliage, the crisp, fresh air, and make snow angels to your heart's content. However, with the right attitude, attire, and sense of adventure these seasonal pleasures can also be enjoyed in the city.

New York

In the Big Apple, the most obvious place to venture to is Central Park. Beautiful in any season, it's the ideal location for a warming power walk, building a snowman with your kids, or ice skating on the central rink.

For a little something different on a sunny fall or winter morning, hop on the subway to Brighton Beach. It's much less crowded than during the summer, and the air is so very fresh that makes a nice change from inner city New York.

Watch the waves lap the sand while sipping on a hot beverage from one of the many Russian cafes nearby. To warm up after your brisk seaside stroll, head for a hearty lunch of Siberian dumplings or soup such as borscht.

Boston

New England is famed for its stunning fall foliage, and Boston is a wonderful place to admire it. A popular route to stroll along is the charming, tree-lined Freedom Trail, a 2.5 mile track with 16 historical sights to discover.

To warm up in the winter, there's nothing quite like ice skating at the Frog Pond rink on Boston Common with views across the city's Downtown landmarks. Join families, couples and other fun-loving folk in a dance on the ice.

Seattle

Snow has a tendency to cover the ground fast and thickly in Seattle, making for picture-perfect winter scenery. Madison Park and its Japanese Garden are ideal for snowball fights and boast beautiful views across Washington state's snow-capped mountains.

After a chilly few hours in the cold, seek comfort at Banya urban spa that boasts warming treatments from massages to super-hot saunas, or indulge in a hot toddy at one of the city's many trendy bars, some of which are speakeasy-themed.

Atlanta

One of the perks of being in Atlanta during the fall and autumn season is its mild climate with temperatures rarely falling below 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

Thanks to the pleasant temperatures, the zoo stays open all year round. Visiting the array of animals, including flamingoes and orangutans is an excellent pastime. Bring along a thermos of hot cocoa or soup and have a brief outdoor picnic.

Albeit slightly outside the city centre, Stone Mountain Park is the ultimate winter destination complete with a slope for sledding. The snow may be artificial, but the experience feels as real as it gets.

Travel To Burma: What Will the Weather Be Like?

As with any holiday, those who are preparing to travel to Burma might be thinking ahead and anticipating the myriad delights that this incredible country has to offer. But looking forward to a trip is not just about daydreaming; it's also important to know what to expect, and how to prepare accordingly. Understanding a little more about Burma's climate, its seasons, and what the weather is like in different parts of the country can be tremendously helpful for those wanting to get the best experience possible. It can inform everything from the choice of when to go, to the packing checklist - so read on for an overview and some practical advice.
The Climate: An Overview
Located in Asia's tropical monsoon region, Burma is generally warm and sees a lot of rainfall, although due to its diverse geography - particularly its differences in altitude - it is also a country of considerable regional variation in weather, and the climate experienced by those who travel to Burma will depend in part on where they go. There are three seasons: summer, from March to May; the rainy season, from June to September; and winter, from October to February. In the coastal regions, there is heavy rainfall and more seasonal variation in temperature than in the central lowlands which stay hot and humid all year round. The delta area of the River Ayeyarwady also receives abundant rainfall, and like much of the interior of the country, can be very hot and humid in the rainy season. Meanwhile, the eastern and northern mountains also see abundant to heavy rainfall, and temperatures can drop very low at higher altitudes in the winter months.
The Seasons: When to Go
While exploring this beautiful country is enjoyable at any time of the year, the effects of the seasons do create a different atmosphere. Some prefer to travel to Burma during the winter, particularly in January or February which are the coolest and driest months, offering considerable relief in the interior - including Mandalay and Bagan - from the intense 30 - 45°c heat of the summer months; the winter is also generally sunny due to reduced cloud cover. However, there are things to enjoy in all seasons: the mountains and hill stations of Shan state are pleasant during the summer, and witnessing the drama of a tropical monsoon is a delight in itself - although accessibility to parts of the country is restricted during the heaviest periods of rainfall between July and September.
Preparing For the Weather
Depending on when they are planning to travel to Burma, visitors will need to pack accordingly. Lightweight clothing will be a relief in the summer heat and humidity, while waterproofs are recommended for all but the driest months. And whatever the season, be sure to take a hat and sunscreen.

A Cycling Vacation in Tropical Cairns

Vacations should be a time of relaxation. A time to take a break from the hustle and bustle of normal daily life and ease temporarily into a period of leisure and discovery.
Unfortunately many of us go on vacation only to return exhausted with our rushing around, afraid to miss anything. We jump onto buses, boats and trains to get from attraction A to attraction B, and often miss out on the bits in between.
Cycling gives you the freedom to still get from A to B, but at a pace that encourages more exploration and discovery of your holiday destination. Cycling for leisure in Cairns is an excellent way to get around, and a perfect way to keep fit and healthy following the excesses of holiday eating and drinking.
As mentioned, Cairns is flat and therefore easy to navigate for the casual bicycle rider. Provided you abide by the rules of the road and keep well to the left you will find Cairns a bicycle friendly city. In fact, cycling is being encouraged within the local community too, and the council have supported this with the recent completion of a dedicated cycle way that stretches from The Pier alongside Cairns' swimming lagoon up to the suburb of Aeroglen, close to the international airport. My wife and I regularly cycle this 13 km round trip. From this track you can easily divert to visit Cairns Botanic Gardens and Centenary Lakes that you can also cycle around.
In Cairns it is OK to use the sidewalks for cycling, remembering of course to give way to pedestrians. In addition, most of the roads have a cycle lane to the immediate left of the traffic lanes, so cycling anywhere within the Cairns area can be easily achieved. If you do choose to cycle you will join many others making their way around points of interest in Cairns.
For the more energetic you can go further afield and visit the northern beaches, or out to Copperlode Dam at Lake Morris, or out to Crystal Cascades for a cool freshwater dip after the ride out there. Port Douglas is not beyond reach either, being 70 kms north of Cairns. In early June each year the Airport Adventure Festival stages an Ironman event that includes a 180 km bicycle leg up towards Port Douglas and back. There are also mountain biking tours available if you are into extreme sports.
If you don't take a bicycle with you on vacation you can always hire one for as long as you like. Different bike types are available and prices range from around $20 for a half day up to about $95 for a full seven days. Extra weeks are nominally about $65. What better way to see Cairns at leisure. Three days economy hire will cost you just $45 for the duration.
Finally, bear in mind that you are vulnerable when cycling anywhere in the world, but as long as you respect the road rules and have respect for other users you should enjoy your relaxing cycling vacation in tropical Cairns.

Holidays to Burma: Important National Events

There is always plenty to do on holidays to Burma, from exploring ancient monuments to sampling the delicious wares of city teashops. But certain days of the year also bring their own experiences and delights. It is always worth finding out about Burma's national events, in part because public holidays mean that banks and many businesses will close and some forward planning might be necessary, but also because learning about important celebrations can help the visitor to better appreciate the country's social and cultural life - and depending on the nature of the event, to join in and have fun. For an overview of the most significant festivals and other events, read on.

Religious Festivals

The most important of all holidays to Burma's people is Burmese New Year's Day, which falls, in the Buddhist calendar, on the 17th of April. It is preceded by the water festival of Maha Thingyan, from the 12th to the 16th of April, during which the king of Nats (a group of spirits honoured alongside the Buddha in Burmese religion), Thagyamin, is believed to descend to Earth, bringing blessings for the year to come. The water-pouring ceremonies of old have been replaced in much of the country by lively but good-natured water fights, providing fun for anyone who wishes to participate, whether they be locals or visitors enjoying holidays to Burma. Other key religious events include the pagoda festivals held in March (known as Tabaung), in which the harvest is celebrated and decorative sand temples are built, and Kason, a festival commemorating the birth, enlightenment and death of the Buddha. Buddhist Lent runs from July 3rd to October 29th, a time for tilling and planting and religious observances. Deepvali, on October 30th, the start of Ramadan, and Christmas Day, on December 25th, are also public holidays.

Political Events

There are also a number of days marked in the Burmese calendar in honour of important historical events, starting on the 4th of January which is Independence Day, commemorating Burma's Declaration of Independence from the British Empire in 1948. It is observed with fairs and sporting activities. Other national events that visitors may encounter during their holidays to Burma include Union Day on February 12th, the anniversary of the Panglong Agreement between the government and leaders of minority groups, May Day on the 1st of May, held in honour of Burma's workers, Martyr's Day on July 19th, held on the anniversary of the assassination of revolutionary leader Aung San in 1947, and National Day, which commemorates the students' strikes of 1920 against the colonial education system. Beyond these nation-wide events, there are days held culturally or politically significant to the country's many ethnic minorities, including Mon National Day in February and Karen New Year on January 5th.

Excuse Me Would You Mind Moving

"Excuse me would you mind moving?" is not too uncommon a question to be asked if you are a solo traveller.

As a frequent traveller I've been posed with this question when it is clear that I am sat alone. Often it is due to people wanting to sit with family or friends.

Ideally when families or travellers are booked together when tickets are bought I think the airlines should seat them together. From experience this often does not happen and it can be a race to the check-in desk to get seats together.

Some airlines (typically of the discount airline nature) charge you a premium to reserve a specific seat or to sit together.

I know the stress it can cause when travelling with my partner/colleague and you want to be sat together.

On a recent flight the guy sat across the aisle from me was asked "Would you mind moving?" In assessment it was a fair request of the person asking to want to sit beside his wife. Added to the fact that the people asking were Muslim made it even more important. As someone who spent close to a year and a half in Saudi Arabia I know how important it is for a Muslim woman not to be sat beside a male stranger.

The thing that gets me is why did the guy have to move rather than the lady?

The guy asked to move was in a seat at the front of the cabin, effectively a bulk head seat. There was plenty of leg room and it is a desire-able seat to have.

For me the question should have been asked at the accompanying seat to where the husband was sat. That would mean the wife would move back in the cabin and the person who would move to accommodate her would benefit from hypothetically a better seat.

On this occasion the guy who was asked to move delayed his decision saying that he would wait until boarding was complete and then assess the availability of any free seats.

As someone who can take numerous flights each month I am not unfamiliar with the "Excuse me would you mind moving?" question. At times I do sometimes decline the invitation. Not to be spiteful but I get sick of it sometimes.

I am someone who has a preference over the type of seat I want to sit in; if on the rare occasion I get a seat that I like (not too often) then I don't want to give it up.

The one thing worse than being asked to move is being forced to move. As a frequent traveller who's flown most months over the last 12 years I have boarded planes to find someone already in my seat. When I point out that they are in my seat they say they know but they are travelling together and want to be together.

I've found people saying it in a non-compromising way too. Travelling can be stressful enough without these unaccommodating individuals.

This scenario is made even more frustrating by people who could be described as "pushing in" during queues.

Recently whilst walking to passport control a couple were split up as she was delayed for something with her luggage. I ended up between him and her in the queue.

Granby CT: Best Communities For Your Home In Connecticut

Granby, Connecticut is a charming rural residential community about 14 miles north of Hartford on the north central border with Massachusetts. Granby is home to many urban professionals working in Hartford's insurance and financial industry.

Connecticut Magazine ranked Granby the #3 overall Connecticut small towns (population 10,000-1500) to live in and #1 small town in Hartford County. The combination of Granby's rural character together with its close proximity to major metropolitan centers makes Granby one of Connecticut's best cities for your home and family.

The community we know today as Granby was a wilderness when it was first settled by a handful of hardy Puritans in 1680 that came over the Talcott Ridge from Windsor and called the area "Salmon Brook".

Because they were on what was at the time the frontier of English civilization, these "outlanders" as they were called settled together for mutual support and defense between the branches of the Salmon Brook - several miles from the main Simsbury settlement and separated by "a large extent of barren pine plain." The soil was rocky and the beautiful stone boundary fences that give the town such charm today was hard work clearing the fields of glacial rocks to be able to till the land.

One of the community's early defining incidents in 1707 was the capture of Daniel Hayes, aged twenty-two by three Native Americans when he went out to check his horse in the meadow. The capture was witnessed by other settlers and a rescue party went after them in hot pursuit but couldn't overtake the captors.

He was taken all the way to Canada over a month long journey tied up each night, then forced to run the gauntlet. Near the end of the gauntlet, he ran into a wigwam to avoid the blow of a club.

The woman of the wigwam had recently lost her husband and son in war, she confronted the attackers declaring her shelter sacred, and adopted Hayes as her son. For several years he took care of the woman and was eventually sold to a Frenchman.

The Frenchman made him a deal and Hayes earned enough to buy his freedom after two years. He then returned to the area from which he had been taken seven years earlier, settled down on a farm in what is now Granby and became prominent in the community's early affairs.

By 1709 eleven families had settled in what today is Granby, but during certain periods was deserted when Indians where a threat and kept the growth of the community slow. As the aging population of the first generation of settlers grew older they resented the requirements of the long travel to church in Simsbury each week and finally received the right to form their own church society in 1736.

They remained an independent spirited community, and during the Revolutionary War resisted sending their townsmen to fight in the Continental Army, insisting on serving in their own militia companies. In 1786, Salmon Brook and Turkey Hills separated from Simsbury and became the town of Granby.

Today, The Salmon Brook Historical Society maintains the 1732 Abijah Rowe house, the 1790 Weed-Enders house, the 1870 Cooley School and the 1914 Colton-Hayes Tobacco Barn & Museum, with many exhibits of 18th and 19th century life.

Housing in Granby is mainly older colonials and single-family homes of traditional designs, although there are also condominiums and new constructions. Along with several small businesses, there are also a few family-owned farms and orchards that still operate along winding back roads.

Granby's educational system, which provides public schooling for about 2,200 students and a full range of academic programs, also offers evening classes for adults.

The McLean Game Refuge is 3,400 acres and is shaped by glaciers, providing outdoor activities like nature study, hiking, cross-country skiing and picnicking. Enders State Forest has a group of hiking trails to six waterfalls. A 72-mile stream consisting of two branches of the Salmon Brook and a major tributary of the Farmington River flow through the town.

Recreation amenities include tennis courts, a playground, ball fields, a swimming pond, a summer day camp and a youth center. An exhilarating Memorial Day road race attracts runners and spectators from Granby and neighboring towns.

Located within about a 25 minute drive from both Hartford and Springfield, Massachusetts, Granby is served by State Routes 10, 20, 189, 202, and 219. Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks is six miles to the east on Route 20.

The combination of Granby's rural charm and colonial homes, together with it close proximity to major metropolitan centers makes Granby one of Connecticut's best cities for your home and family.

Get to Know Zimbabwe

Having had various names in the past - Rhodesia, Southern Rhodesia, Zimbabwe-Rhodesia - Zimbabwe now goes only by this name. Having regained independence from the United Kingdom in April 1980, the country entered its still ongoing era of Robert Mugabe's rule.

The controversial leader has been President since 1987, and has been criticised internationally as an unfair ruler, tolerating state-level corruption and torture. His main opponent is Morgan Tsvangirai, the leader of the Movement for Democratic Change.

In the late 90s and early 2000s, the country started experiencing economic turmoil with many industrial firms forced to shut due to high real interest rates.

Elections in 2002 gained international attention as they were found to be rigged, and members of the opposition found to have been intimidated and suppressed. In 2008, Tsvangirai went as far as to withdraw his candidacy for presidency due to violence against his party members.

Since 2009, a coalition government has been in force, with Tsvangirai the Prime Minister. Many believe this is the long awaited start of political change.

Tourism

In light of the political goings-on and the Land Reform programme that was passed in 2000, quite a few international airlines have stopped serving Zimbabwe. Though this has made travelling to the South African country a tad more difficult, it doesn't in any way imply it's not worth the journey. In fact, the tourism industry is seeing a gradual revival with international tour operators beginning once more to offer package deals and tours.

Zimbabwe is well worth a visit. Its best known attraction is Victoria Falls, the world's largest waterfall in terms of the overall size of its sheet of falling water. The falls are located on the river Zambezi, on the border with Zambia. Accommodation and amenities are available at the tourist towns nearby.

The Great Zimbabwe National Monument is the site of a ruined city, the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe. It was built from the 11th to the 14th Centuries. The ruins are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The capital city of Harare is definitely worth exploring. Inner city sights worth seeing are the National Gallery, Chapungu Sculpture Park, the National Botanic Garden, and Kopje hill for stunning views.

To ease your travels, look into a cheap calls to Zimbabwe service to book your accommodation and tours.

English is an official language in the country so foreign visitors can communicate very easily with the friendly locals. As a tourist, there's no need to worry about the political situation unless you do something to provoke a reaction.

Follow Your Dreams - A Lesson on Synchronicity

Synchronicity (n.)
- a philosophical concept of a meaningful coincidence in time of two or more causally unrelated events

When I really think about it, our lives are wonderfully synchronistic. The impetus behind major life changes can sometimes be traced back to the meaningful coincidence when the inception of an idea first occurred. Sometimes these ideas grow in unique and inexplicable ways, even taking years before they actually manifest into something real.

In 1998, I was a freshman in college, and it was the first time I had ever heard about through-hiking the Appalachian Trail (AT). At the time I found the notion of a six-month hike intriguing, but improbable. A couple of year later, a friend of mine from Georgia also talked about the AT. We even did a day-hike up Blood Mountain which was part of this legendary footpath. The wheels were starting to spin and upon graduating, the once improbable, became possible. The following year, in spring of 2003, I set out to through-hike of the Appalachian Trail.

A little over five months later, I neared the end of my AT through-hike. Throughout the journey, I met an eclectic group of people from all walks of life. Their unconventional outlooks inspired me to consider a road less traveled. I decided to pursue another dream of living abroad and learning another language. Just days before I finished the hike, I found myself at a hiker-hostel reading an article in Backpacker Magazine. The article was about the biodiversity in Costa Rica and some of the eco-friendly hiking trails the country had to offer. I remember thinking to myself, "Costa Rica would be a cool place to live." I worked a couple of seasonal jobs to save money, and one year later, in the fall of 2004, I booked a plane ticket and traveled to Costa Rica on a whim. It was a true leap of faith.

After moving to Costa Rica, several other synchronistic events occurred. I became a long-term volunteer with Habitat for Humanity International. Thus, I came into contact with many incoming volunteers. The first volunteer who I met was a former English teacher in Japan. He spoke highly of life in Japan and the money that could be made teaching English. A different volunteer, who came as an intern to complete a study on the effects of housing, also had international teaching experience. Several years back she was a WorldTeach volunteer in Ecuador. I met yet another teacher when I traveled north to Nicaragua for a week in order to renew my tourist visa. I found myself in a small beach town called San Juan del Sur where I met an American girl out on the beach. She was a volunteer teacher at an orphanage called Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos. Still, my chance meetings with international teachers continued. Before leaving Costa Rica, I went hiking with my father in one of Costa Rica's most pristine national parks, Corcovado. The ranger station where we stayed was practically deserted because it was the start of the rainy season. However, there was a Canadian couple who stayed the night. They were vacationing in Costa Rica after having just completed a year teaching English in Busan, South Korea. They had a lot of wonderful things to say about Korea and planned to return for another year of teaching. Suffice to say, as my time in Costa Rica drew to a close, I had decided on my next professional adventure - teaching English abroad.

My financial situation dictated that I look for teaching positions that paid well. Thus, I focused primarily on East Asia. Per the strong recommendation of the Canadian couple I had met hiking in Corcovado, I focused my search on teaching positions in South Korea. It wasn't long before I found a position in the city of Daegu. In 2006, I moved across the Pacific and taught English in Korea for three years. Eventually, my wanderlust prevailed and I decided to move on. After such a positive experience volunteering in Costa Rica, I wanted to explore international teaching opportunities as a volunteer. When I began my search, I contacted the volunteer whom I'd met in Costa Rica to get more information about the WorldTeach organization.

WorldTeach is a non-profit organization that places teachers in educational capacities in developing countries. A month after leaving South Korea, I applied and accepted a teaching placement with WorldTeach in 2010. This opportunity led me to the country of Namibia in Southern Africa. My commitment in Namibia was for only one year. It wasn't before long before I started thinking about my next possible teaching job. But I already had one place in mind - Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos.

Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH) is an organization that cares for orphaned and abandoned children. Currently, NPH operates 9 homes throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Since the end of 2004, I had followed the NPH website and would periodically check the site for potential volunteer opportunities. A few months after I returned from Namibia, in early 2011, I came across a job posting for an English teacher at the NPH home in the Dominican Republic. It had been over six years since meeting that girl in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua who first told me about the orphanage. To this day, I'm convinced that if I had never met her, I would not have moved to the Dominican Republic to teach English at NPH's school.

Things to Consider to Find the Right Park City Resorts for Your Event

Park City is one of the most popular destinations for tourists in Utah. This means tourists will flock to the area throughout the year, particularly in the winter when skiing is in season. However, this isn't the only reason people come to stay in the Park City resorts. These resorts often offer banquet halls and meeting facilities for weddings, business meetings and more. Knowing what resorts offer for these events can help you choose the right one.

Space

One of the first things you need to consider for your event is how many people will be invited. Whether you are having a small or large wedding or other event, you need to find a resort that offers the space you need. In some cases, you may be stuck with a large room, no matter how many people attend. However, other resorts can customize your space so you only use the amount you need for your event.

Catering

Many events, especially weddings, offer food to those who will be attending. In some Park City resorts, you will have to find an external caterer to bring in the food for your event. However, you can make your entire vent go more smoothly by finding a resort that offers onsite catering so you don't need to worry if the food will get there on time or whether it will still be warm. You will have a delicious meal or appetizer spread when you are ready for it.

Lodging

When people travel to Park City to attend your event, you need to make sure you have the lodging space for them. However, you can't simply think about having the right number of rooms for everyone who is attending; you also need to make sure the rooms are affordable for everyone. Choosing to have your reception or business meeting in a resort, you can be sure there will be a wide variety of rooms from which to choose.

As you consider all the Park City resorts that have banquet halls and meeting rooms available for your event, be sure you think about all aspects of the room and your event. You need to find a place that will offer the space you need to accommodate your guest list. It is also beneficial to find a resort that will provide the catering on the spot instead of relying on an outside company. Finally, if people are coming from out of town, you want to be sure they have the right lodging available for all your guests who need it.
